Mastering the basic dog training commands – part 2

In the last article we covered the “sit” command. Today it's the turn of “stay”.

First, ask your dog to sit. Then give a clear hand signal – something like a “stop” sign (where you raise your palm) is ideal. Wait a few seconds, then reward your dog. It's important to reward them while they're still sitting. If they move, they shouldn't get a treat.

Over time, increase how long your dog stays sitting. The next task is to increase the distance between you and your dog. Do this step by step, and don't be tempted to move too far, too fast.
