Mastering basic training commands for dogs - part 1

There are a few simple commands that are worth learning when you first start training your dog.

Commands matter for every dog and their owner. And although the thought of getting a disobedient puppy to follow instructions might sound daunting, it can actually be fun. Learning the techniques is easier than we think, and working through the list is one of the most rewarding things you can do together with your dog.

Let's start with the basics:
1. Start with short sessions of 5 to 10 minutes in a familiar setting.
2. First master the "sit" command and build from there.
3. Start practising somewhere quiet and familiar. Once you feel confident, move on to the garden before trying it in public places.
4. Remember that, just like people, dogs learn at different speeds. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't work the first time.
5. Take frequent breaks, build in plenty of playtime, and keep trying.

The "sit" command

While your dog is standing, hold a treat close to their nose. Slowly move the treat up and over their head in an arc. As they follow the treat, they'll start to sit. As soon as they do, give them the treat.

Your dog will start sitting for longer once they've been rewarded every time. Now it's time to add the cue: "sit". Say the word every time they sit, but be careful not to say it before they're in position.
