While some dog breeds can't wait to get their coat wet, others are perfectly happy staying dry! Surprisingly or not, a good number of these breeds are small dogs. They'd rather sunbathe than swim. Of course, that doesn't mean you can't teach these breeds to swim or to love water! In today's article, we'll look at 11 dog breeds that aren't big fans of water.
1. Chihuahua
Chihuahuas may be small in size, but not in character! Even when their coat is dry, they tend to shiver. They'd often rather go for a walk in the sun than come into contact with water.
2. Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies generally have a coat that needs a lot of upkeep. Of course, they can also be difficult characters. On the whole, Yorkies aren't the biggest fans of water. That said, this can change with enough patience and practice.
3. Pug
Pugs usually don't enjoy walks on the beach, or baths. Because of their flat faces, they can easily overheat in the sun, and being submerged in water is more terrifying than refreshing for them.
4. Pekingese
Like its friends in the toy breed group, the Pekingese was bred to be charming rather than hardy. This dignified little dog wouldn't want to "disgrace" itself by trying to swim.
5. Boxer
According to research from the American Kennel Club, Boxers aren't natural swimmers. Because they're missing a good deal of tail and have slightly deeper chests, swimming is a tough task for them compared with some other breeds. Even so, you can teach your Boxer to swim and to love water – as long as you stock up on plenty of patience and treats!
6. Maltese
The Maltese is more a princess of dry land than of the sea. Bred for cuddles and pampering, a gentle bath in the tub is about as close to water as they'll get.
7. Bichon Frise
Like other small dogs, the Bichon Frise was bred for company. And how is this big ball of fluff supposed to stay friendly if you dunk them in water? Besides, we all know the golden rule for keeping lovely curls in good shape: no getting your hair wet for at least 24 hours after curling it!
8. Pomeranian
Pomeranians would also rather run around on dry land and show off their agility in games than swim in water. On the whole, they're an extremely clever breed, which helps them choose their battles carefully. That's why you'll rarely find them in a situation they can't handle.
9. Greyhound
They're known for reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h, almost as fast as a galloping horse. They're a hunting breed, and running on dry land — not swimming — is in their blood.
10. Dachshund
Because of their short legs and heavy build, the Dachshund isn't a natural swimmer. (This is a trait it shares with breeds like the Boxer and the Bulldog.) That doesn't mean they can't swim, but they're much more likely to be afraid of water to begin with.
11. Shih Tzu
Although they look like little baby seals when wet, Shih Tzus don't enjoy being in water. They have so much coat that it can take days for them to dry out properly again!
