Stubbs the cat – the unusual "mayor" of Talkeetna, Alaska

If you think politics is boring, you probably haven't heard of Talkeetna – a small town in Alaska where, for a full 20 years, the office of mayor was held by… a cat. Yes, that's right – a cat, and not just any cat, but the charismatic Stubbs, who became a local legend and an international sensation.
A little about Talkeetna
With a population of around 1,000, Talkeetna is known as a starting point for climbers heading up Denali – the highest peak in North America. But the town became world-famous not because of the mountains, but because of its "furry leader".
How a cat becomes "mayor"
In 1997, the manager of the local general store, Nagley's, adopted a Manx cat and named him Stubbs. He quickly became a favourite among residents – so much so that he was given the title of "honorary mayor". There was no real election campaign, because Talkeetna isn't officially incorporated as a town at all, but who needs ballots when everyone already loves their shaggy candidate?

Stubbs had his own habits, which quickly made him a local attraction. Every afternoon he'd cross the street to the local pub, where he'd get his special "drink" – water with catnip, served in a margarita glass. Tourists from all over the world came, year after year, to have their photo taken with Alaska's most famous mayor.
Stubbs's story wasn't without drama. He fell into a deep-fat fryer (thankfully switched off), was shot with an air rifle, got caught on a rubbish truck, and was even attacked by a dog. Through it all, he survived, and with every mishap his legendary status only grew. Whenever he needed treatment, the whole Talkeetna community rallied around fundraising campaigns – further proof of just how deep the bond was between the people and their "mayor".
Stubbs's legacy
In 2017, Stubbs passed away at the age of 20, leaving behind two decades of "service" and memories no one in Talkeetna will forget. The tradition didn't end there, though – his successors Aurora and Denali took over the post. Today, only Aurora continues to welcome visitors at Nagley's and to remind everyone that politics doesn't always have to come in a suit and tie – sometimes it comes with whiskers and a fluffy tail.

Stubbs's story shows us that leadership isn't always measured in power and ambition. Sometimes it comes down to the ability to bring smiles and bring people together. And if you ask the people of Talkeetna – no human could ever have made a better mayor than their beloved cat.
